» 2014 MARION'S FAB FOURS |
The annual Fab Fours tournament
was held at Needham Market on Sunday 20th July.
A capacity entry of 40 teams
included players from Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Essex, Hertfordshire
and Norfolk.
The event was played down to
the final which was fought out between Blakes & Clay (unsurprisingly
a team made up of players from Blakenham and Claydon) and No
Hopers (who were clearly anything but and hailed from Elmstead
Market).
It was the No Hopers that made
the early running and held a 5-2 lead after 3 ends, but thereafter
the Essex team suffered something of a collapse as Blakes &
Clay came through in the second half of the game to record an
11-5 win.

For Andy and Don, from the
Blakes & Clay team, it was their second win on the trot as
they were half of the winning team from June's charity tournament,
raising funds on behalf of Suffolk Family Carers.
Mark Wilson, from the charity,
was at Needham to receive a cheque for £550 from Neil West,
the SCBA Chairman.

» 2014 COCKFIELD INVITATION FOURS |
Well done Belstead who, on
Sunday 23 March, won the Cockfield Invitation Fours trophy. They
had won the trophy the previous year and defended it successfully
being too strong for runners-up Whelnetham.
Thank you very much from all
of us in the Cockfield Club to everyone who took part. Your generosity
helped us to raise £700 which will be shared equally between
two worthy causes, the East Anglian Air Ambulance and the MacMillan
Nurses.
Do come back again next February
for another enjoyable day's bowling, and help us to raise even
more money for them.

On Sunday 6 April the Suffolk
County Squad held the first of their three fundraising events,
the Random Triples.
96 bowlers took part, all randomly
drawn into different triples for each of their five games.
Looking back at past years
events, to stand a chance of winning overall you would have to
win all five games.
After everyone had played two games only 21 bowlers had won both
and they were headed by Jim Southgate with 31 shots scored.
Following completion of three
games, those with maximum points had reduced to 13. Jim Southgate
had retained top spot having increased his shots scored to 45
and the chasing pack (with 30+ shots) was Jane Coulon, Chris
Clark, Mel Brinkley and Tom Runnacles.
The number of bowlers with
consecutive wins reduced again after four games and now only
9 bowlers remained. The leader was unaltered, Jim Southgate with
51 shots. He was followed by Mel Brinkley (41 shots), Keith Jolly
and Linda Tricker (38), Tom Runnacles (37), Robert Parnell (36),
Maxine Poulter (35), Andy Pooley and Colin Felingham (both 33).
The fifth round of games saw
an interesting draw and results which would alter the leader
board dramatically. Initially Jim Southgate played in a triple
against Mel Brinkley and that game finished in a 6-6 draw, effectively
ending both of their chances. Meanwhile Keith Jolly and Linda
Tricker played in the same triple and they lost, knocking both
of them out of the running. Wins were secured by Robert Parnell
and Maxine Poulter and they finished on 43 shots scored. Andy
Pooley and Colin Fellingham also both won but were unable to
score enough shots to take them above either Robert or Maxine.
That left Tom Runnacles needing to win his game and score at
least seven shots to snatch top spot. In a low scoring game his
triple had an early lead, but going into the last end they were
6-5 behind. However they scored the two shots Tom needed on the
last end to edge him into first place and the overall win.

On Sunday 7 April 2013 the
Suffolk County Squad held the first of their 2013 fundraising
events, the Random Triples.
90 bowlers entered, all randomly
drawn into a team of three for each of their five games on different
mats during the day.
After everyone had played two
games only 25 bowlers were left unbeaten.
When everyone had played their
third game the number of bowlers who had yet to lose had been
reduced to 15. With three wins (six points), Colin Ward and Roland
Folkes held the joint lead with 30 shots scored, but close behind
were Peter Mayes, Peter Tucker and John Varden with 26 shots.
The number of unbeaten bowlers
reduced again after everyone had played four games, when only
8 bowlers remained. The new leader was Steven Cain with eight
points and 40 shots but just behind him were Colin Ward and Sue
Gilder with 36 shots, followed by Peter Tucker and Keith Fellingham
with 35 shots. Making up the eight were Angela Newling (27 shots),
Tony Stevenson (26 shots) and Diane Cornwell who had seven points.
There were also a number of bowlers on six points waiting for
the leaders to slip up, so the fifth games would decide the winner.
It was the leader Steven Cain
who set the target winning his last game 10-0, beating the previously
unbeaten Peter Tucker in the process. There were then defeats
for Sue Gilder, Colin Ward and Angela Newling. However Keith
Fellingham and Tony Stevenson both then won to take them to ten
points but they couldnt score enough shots to overtake
Steven Cain.
Winning all five games and
scoring fifty shots, Steven Cain was the overall winner.

» 2013 COCKFIELD INVITATION FOURS |
A New Name on a New Trophy
The usual mixture of competitive bowling and friendly rivalry
ended with the presentation of Cockfield's shiny, brand new cup
to first-time winners Belstead, who defeated Kesgrave in the
final.
A pleasant sunny day saw many competitors taking a stroll between
games. Everyone seemed to enjoy the delicious lunch provided
by Sue, Sheila and other club members, but most people still
had room for quantities of home-made cakes with their afternoon
tea.
The raffle and tombola were popular as ever, and people were
most generous in their support for our two chosen charities.
As a result we shall be sending the Air Ambulance and St Nicholas
Hospice cheques for £350. Thank you everyone, and see you
next year.
