S.C.B.A. Summer League Finals
Day 2010
On Sunday 29 August, Needham
Market Community Centre hosted the Summer League Finals day.
At the beginning of May thirty
five teams were divided into five geographical leagues, with
the league winners qualifying for finals day.
After some competitive but
friendly matches, the five league winners were:
Hadleigh
Belstead
Stanningfield
Kelsale
Great Blakenham
During Finals day each team
would play one game against each of the other teams. With two
points for a win and one for a draw, the team with the most points
at the end of the day would be the Summer League champons.
The morning session consisted
of five eleven end rinks (fours) games.
It was Belstead, who had been
unbeaten in their league, who made the best start. One of their
rinks raced to an early 8-0 lead over Hadleigh. The Hadleigh
rink then staged a fantastic comeback to level the game at 10-10
after nine ends. However Belstead hit back to sneak a 12-11 win.
The other Belstead rink were involved in a far tighter game against
a Stanningfield rink, but by halfway they had a lead which they
extended, winning 12-5.
In the other rinks games, there
were single wins for Stanningfield, Kelsale and Great Blakenham.
Stanningfield took an early lead over a Kelsale rink and didnt
look back, winning 16-4. Meanwhile the other Kelsale rink were
in control from the start against a Great Blakenham rink, comfortably
winning 16-4. Great Blakenhams win came against a Hadleigh
rink in another game where an early lead was converted into a
convincing win, 16-7.
So after the rinks games it
was Belstead had the lead overall with four points, with Stanningfield,
Kelsale and Great Blakenham all on two points.
The afternoon session changed
to triples, again five eleven end games.
The Great Blakenham triples
were involved in two close games. In a low scoring encounter
against Belstead, neither triple were able to gain a commanding
lead. The game went to the last end and the Great Blakenham triple
did just enough to edge a win 7-6.
The other Great Blakenham triple
took an early 5-0 lead against a Stanningfield triple, but by
the ninth end the score was level at 10-10. The last two ends
were tight affairs, they were shared and the game finished 11-11.
Overall Great Blakenham had finished on five points.
Meanwhile the other Stanningfield
triple had opened up an early advantage against a Hadleigh triple.
That lead was gradually increased, ending with a 12-6 Stanningfield
win. Overall Stanningfield had also finished on five points.
At the same time a Belstead
triple had won the first few ends against Kelsale. However that
lead soon disappeared with Kelsale opening up a healthy lead.
The Kelsale triple just holding on to win by the odd shot 12-11.
Belstead, the halfway leaders had now lost both triples and had
finished overall on four points.
The other game between Kelsale
and Hadleigh proved to be the most one-sided game of the day.
After six ends Kelsale had a comfortable 8-1 lead, but they did
not relax, piling on the shots they finished as massive 24-1
winners.
With both of their triples
winning, Kelsale had scored six points overall and had finished
in first place.
On the day Kelsale had been the most consistent team and fully
deserved their win and title of 2010 Summer League champions.
