Singles |
This year's Singles gave us
the biggest entry in years, with 52 entries.
The 9 group winners and 7 best runners-up would qualify for the
knockout rounds.
Group 1 was won by Cockfield B who won all 4 games,
with Knodishall B going through on 6 points and 34 shots.
Group 2 was very close, with Belstead coming out
on top with 6 points, 29 shots for, and 13 against, only bettering
Elmsett C (6/29/19) on shots against. Unfortunately they were
short of qualification by just one shot, and so didn't proceed.
Group 3 saw Tostock B go through as group winners,
having won all 4 games. Second place went to Kelsale A
on 6 points and 36 shots, only just better than Barking B's 6
points and 34 shots.
Group 4 was topped by Barking C on 7 points, but
runners-up Chelmondiston G (6 points and 28 shots) missed out
on going through by a couple of shots.
Group 5 saw Thurston easily finish top, on 8 points,
while Kelsale D (6 points and 31 shots) did enough to
make it through.
Group 6 finished with 3 teams tied on 6 points. Barking
A (36 shots) took first place, while Elmsett B (30
shots) took second, leaving Stanningfield E (25 points) in third.
Group 7 produced two players who each took 4 wins (in
a group of 6 playing 4 games each, they managed to avoid one
another). Brockley (41 shots) took first, while Cockfield
A (36) were second.
Group 8 was another group that finished with 3 on 6 points.
Hundon A (35 shots) took the win, Stanningfield D
(31 shots for, 16 against) were second, with Burstall A (31 shots
for, 22 against) narrowly missing out.
Group 9 also finished with 3 on 3 wins and
1 loss. Badwell Ash (39 shots) was through, along with
Gt Blakenham (37 shots), while Hundon C (31 shots) didn't
make it though.
Knockout Rounds
First Round
In a very close game, the difference between Barking
A and Brockley was a 3 on the 5th end to Barking who
went through with a 6-4 win.
Cockfield B led Gt Blakenham 5-0 after
3 ends, but only just held on to win 6-5.
Stanningfield D were 8-0 over Belstead after
3 ends. 2 ends later it was 8-6, but the comeback was halted,
and Stanningfield won 9-7.
Cockfield A led Tostock B from the start,
dropping just one end on the way to a 9-2 victory.
It ws 4-4 after 4 ends between
Barking C and Elmsett B, but Barking proceeded
to get two maximums on the next 2 ends, and ended up 12-5 winners.
Thurston and Kelsale A was all square
after 3 ends, but Thurston took the next 3 ends, and won the
game 9-3.
It was one shot an end, for
the first 5 ends between Badwell Ash and Kelsale D,
but Kelsale picked up 5 on the last 2 ends, to win 7-3.
Another close game up to the
halfway point, as Hundon A and Knodishall B were
3-3 after 4. But Hundon won the last 3 ends, and took the game
9-3.
Quarter Finals
Rita Runnacles (Barking) was 5 up over Ann Blundell
(Stanningfield) after just 2 ends, and never looked back, taking
a 10-1 win.
Paul Leach (Thurston) got his nose in front of
reigning champion Peter Fellingham (Cockfield) early on,
but the key to his win was a full house on the 4th end, just
as Peter had drawn level. Peter pulled it back to within a shot
with an end to go, but Paul took that last end for an 8-6 victory.
Oscar Mew (Kelsale) pulled out a 5 shot advantage
over the first 4 ends, against Mick Watkins (Barking),
and held on to win 6-3.
Ellen Grube (Hundon) was out in front early on,
against Colin Fellingham (Cockfield), and never gave Colin
a chance as she went on to win 10-3.
Semi-Finals
Rita Runnacles earned an early edge in her game against
Oscar Mew, that served her well. Although he managed to
level the game at 5-5 with a 3 on the penultimate end, Rita did
just enough on the last to win 6-5. Watch the game here.
Ellen Grube made another strong start, this time
against Paul Leach, winning the fiorst 4 ends, and even
though she only had 5 on the board, it was enough, as she took
the game 6-1.
Final
Ellen Grube (Hundon) v Rita Runnacles (Barking) |
|
It really was a day for the ladies. Only 2 women had won the
Singles title since its inception in 1988, and today would produce
the third in what was the first all-female final.
Ellen put her stamp on the
game on the first end with a 3, and 3 ends later would do the
same again, to lead 7-1 at that stage. Rita pulled back 2 on
the 5th end, but Ellen put the game out of reach with a single
on the 6th. The final end was played, even though the result
was settled, and it gave Rita the chance to make the game look
closer than, in truth, it had been, as she took all 4 shots,
to finish 8-7 in favour of Ellen.
Well done to both finalists,
and thanks to everyone who supported the event, and in particular
those who stayed to help put the equipment away at the end of
the day.

with 27 shots, won the group by a single shot. Both teams were
through.
Group 7 was won by Barking B, who won
all their games, while Claydon C lost just one, to go
through in second.
Group 8 saw a convincing win for Hundon
A, who finished on a maximum 8 points, three teams managed
2 wins, none of them were through.
Group 9 saw a clean sweep of wins for Barking/Belstead.
Elmsett As 5 points was good enough for second,
but not good enough for them to qualify.
Group 10 was won by Kelsale who took
4 narrow wins. Knodishall C just squeezed through as a
runner-up with 6 points and 23 shots.
Knockout Rounds
First Round
Hundon A took a comfotable
9-0 win over Knodishall C, finishing the game off in just
6 ends. Hundon B got their noses in front of Claydon
C, and held on to win 5-3. Barking/Belstead killed
their game against Barrow B, with a 5 on end 6, winning
11-3. Barking B got themselves comfortably ahead of Stanningfield
B, to win 7-4. Claydon B just stayed ahead of Knodishall
B, winning 5-3. Gt Blakenham won all last 4 ends of
their game against Cockfield B, to take an 8-2 victory.
A see-sawing game saw Old Felixstowe A eventually beating
Kelsale 10-6, and Chelmondiston A sealed victory
against Claydon A on the last end, 7-3.
Quarter Finals
Barking/Belstead had the best of the middle part of
the game against Hundon A, winning 7-4. Watch the game here.
A very close game between Hundon
B and Barking B was settled on end 6 as Barking took
3, winning the game 7-5. Watch the game here.
Gt Blakenham ran out to an 11-1 lead against Old
Felixstowe A, after 5 ends, the game finished 11-5.
Claydon B did not have an answer for Chelmondiston
A, who pulled away to a 9-2 win.
Semi-Finals
Gt Blakenham (Steven
Cain & Michael Welham) v Chelmondiston A (Bruce Miller &
Michael Maile)
Blakenham won the first end, and stayed in front for the whole
game. They led 6-1 at 4 ends, and finished 7-3 winner. Watch the game here.
Barking/Belstead
(Mick Watkins & Tony Stevenson) v Barking A (Sue Gilder &
Paul Bishop)
It was Barking/Belstead who struck the first blow, picking up
3 on the first end, and they never looked back. They led 7-1
after 5 ends, and finished the gaem off with a 4 on the last
end, to win 11-2. Watch
the game here.
Final
Barking/Belstead (Mick
Watkins & Tony Stevenson) v Gt Blakenham (Steven Cain &
Michael Welham)
Three on the first
end to Barking/Belstead was a very good start, they followed
it up with a one to lead 4-0 after 2. Blakenham chipped one back,
but the ead was back to 4 after 4 ends, at 5-1. The 5th end brought
Blakenham a single, then another on the next. 5-3, one end to
go. It didn't look good for Blakenham, but their opposition left
the door open somewhat, and Steven turned the end around gaining
two to force an extra end. But they weren't able to complete
their comeback, the early woods favoured Barking/Belstead, and
though there were only millimetres in it at the end, as Steven
nearly pulled off more heroics, it ended up 2 to Barking/Belstead,
and a 7-5 win.
Watch the
game here.
It was Tony's first Suffolk
title, and Mick's third Pairs win.

Triples |
There were 27 entries for this
years event, just one down on last year.
The teams were divided into 3 groups of 5 and 2 of 6. The winners
of each group would progress straight to the last 8, and would
be joined by the winners of the First Round, which would consist
of the 5 runners-up and the best 3rd placed team.
Group 1
Two teams finished on 6 points, Claydon B, who scored
27 shots to win the group, and Hundon/Chelmondiston who
were 5 shots behind, in second. Hintlesham & Chattisham
A, who finished on 4 points and 31 shots, finished up as
the best 3rd placed team, and were also through.
Group 2
Knodishall B, who won all 4 of their games, took first place
comfortably, second place went to Barrow B, with 5 points
(2 wins, a draw, and a loss).
Group 3
Chelmondiston A were one of only 3 teams to win all their
group games, giving them the group win. Second place went to
Stanningfield A who lost just once.
Group 4
With a game to go, Hundon led the group on 5 points, with
Belstead second on 4. Belstead won their final game, and
with Hundon losing, leapfrogged over them to win the group. Hundon
had still done well enough for second place.
Group 5
There was little doubt who the favourites were, before the games
started, it was Claydon A, and they did indeed go on to
win all their games, to take the group win. Chelmondiston
B lost just once, and were through in second.
First Round (Runners-Up and 3rd Place)
Hundon/Chelmondiston didn't get a look in against a Barrow
B team who were on fire, andraced to a 13-0 victory.
Stanningfield A against Hundon was extremely
close, and required an extra end to seperate the two teams. Stanningfield
won that end to take a 6-4 victory. Watch the game here.
Another team who barely got
a look in was Hintlesham & Chattisham A. They only
won one end against Chelmondiston B, and that only came
when the game was already beyond their reach. Chelmo won 8-1.
Watch
the game here.
Quarter Finals (Group and First Round Winners)
Barrow B took a 5 against Chelmondiston A, to catapult
them into the lead on end 4, but immediately dropped a 4, from
which they were unable to recover, although they only just lost
out, as Chelmo took the game 9-8.
Claydon A always had their noses in front against
Belstead, running out to an 8-1 win, with an end to spare.
Chelmondiston B were nicely ahead against Claydon
B, 6-1 after 3 ends, but proceeded to drop a 3, followed
immediately by a 4. Unfortunately for Chelmo, the clock ran out
on them, with the score at 8-7 to Claydon. Watch the game here.
Another close one between Knodishall
B and Stanningfield A, with never more than a couple
of shots in it. It was just 5-4 to Knodishall, heading into the
last end, which Knodishall took, to win 6-4. Watch the game here.
Semi-Finals
Claydon B picked up
a 4 on the 2nd end against Knodishall B, which you'd think
would be crucial, but Knodishall clawed their way back to just
a shot down with what turned out to be an end to go, taking 2
on the 6th end to win 7-6.
Claydon A once again looked mighty, this time
against Chelmondiston A, 9-0 up after 4 ends, they took
the game 12-2. Watch
the game here.
Final
Claydon (Sam Runnacles,
Andy Pooley & David Ford) v Knodishall (Chris &
Shirley Tilbrook and Val Game)
After taking a shot each on the first 2 ends, the game's pivotal
moment came on end 3. Claydon picked up a 4, to put them nicely
ahead, but for once they didn't simply run away with the game.
From 5-1, Knodishall picked up a couple to make it 5-3, and going
into the last end there was still just a couple of shots in it,
at 6-4. However Claydon were in their early on that final end,
and Knodishall weren't quite able to get at the shot wood, and
the game went to Claydon 7-4.

game here.

Fours |
26 teams entered this years
event, playing in 5 groups, with the winners, runners-up and
the best 3rd placed team making it through to the knockout stages.
Group 1
Hundons 3 wins were enough to win the group, while
Elmsett B, despite only winning 2 games, were also through,
thanks to their better shots.
Group 2
Hintlesham B won all their games, while Copdock &
Washbrook lost just the one, to go through in second.
Group 3
Elmsett A took 3 wins, to top the group, while Burstall
were the best of 3 teams to finish on 4 points.
Group 4
Three teams won 3 games, and lost 1. Belstead/Brockley
came out on top, with 50 shots, Claydon A were second
on 37, while Cockfield, on 22 shots, missed out.
Group 5
Claydon/Chelmondiston and Barking both finished on
7 points, with the first of those winning the group thanks to
their shots. Knodishall, on 6 points and 32 shots were
the best 3rd placed team, and were also through.
Knockout Rounds
First Round (Runners-Up and 3rd place)
Copdock & Washbrook pushed Claydon A all the
way, but Claydon tied the game on the last end, and won it on
an extra end, 7-6.
Burstall were 4-1 up against Elmsett B but dropped
a 5 on the 5th end, and went on to win 7-5.
Barking against Knodishall was all square after
2 ends, but a 5 on the 3rd pretty much ended the game, which
finished 11-2 to Barking.
Quarter Finals (Group Winners and First Round Winners)
Hundon chipped their way into a 3-0 lead over 3 ends against
Claydon A, but dropped a 6 on the 4th, after which it
was all Claydon, who won 10-3.
Hintlesham B went out to a 4-0 lead over Barking,
and just about held on to win 5-4.
Claydon/Chelmondiston ran away with their game against
Elmsett A, winning 17-0.
Belstead/Brockley came back from a 6-2 deficit against
Elmsett B to tie the game going into the last end, but
Elmsett took one on the last in the closest of measures, winning
7-6.
Semi-Finals
Claydon/Chelmo against Elmsett B was close
all the way through, but C/C edged out to a slim 5-3 lead with
an end to go, and allowed Elmsett just the one shot on the last
end, to win 5-4. Watch
the game here.
Hintlesham B might have gone into their match against
Claydon A as underdogs, but they were unfazed. They took
the first 4 ends, and were 5-0 up before the opposition scored.
That leasd was down to just 5-3 going into the last end, but
Hintlesham stopped the rot, and brought it home for a 7-3 win.
Watch
the game here.
Final
Claydon/Chelmondiston
(Sam Runnacles, Ally Hobbs, and Adam & Karen Hubbard) v Hintlesham
(Frank Wilkin, Glen Avis and Lauren & Tom Beckett)
Even after Hintlesham's Semi-Final win, it was Claydon/Chelmondiston
who were the clear favourites. However, that idea was smashed
on the first end as Hintlesham took a 5. And that was no fluke
as they carried on racking up the shots. By the time CC won an
end, Hintlesham already had 11 in the bag, and there were just
2 ends to go. But any slim hopes of a comeback were smashed as
Hintlesham took the 6th end, and the game was over, 12-1 to Hintlesham.
Hintlesham did not drop a point
all day, beating perhaps the two top favourites in their final
two games. It was unquestionably Hintlesham's day.
