The 2015 Eastern Counties Champion
of Champions was hosted by Suffolk at Needham Market on 10th
May.
FOURS
Tom, Sam, Rita & Peter Runnacles (Barking)
Suffolk began the day with a nervy 11-8 win over Norfolk, thanks
to a 5 shot haul on the 5th end. However their next game, against
Hertfordshire, was much more assured as they raced out into the
lead and were able to cruise home to a 13-3 victory.
The third game of the day was
going to be make or break as it came against Cambridgeshire,
the only other undefeated team. And they knew that the game would
be as tight as it would be crucial to the outcome of the day's
play.
The first 2 ends went to Cambridgeshire,
but only by a shot each. Suffolk levelled on the next and then
took the next 2 to lead 4-2 as they crossed the halfway mark
in the game. The key to the game was getting the early woods
in, which Suffolk did, and blocking up wherever possible, which
they also did to great effect. The remaining ends went one way
or the other by just one shot, as Suffolk came home to a 6-4
win, making them the clear event leaders.
Essex were next up and although
Suffolk led all the way it was getting close, but a good last
end saw them home 9-6 and kept them ahead of Cambridgeshire.
With a two point gap at the
top Suffolk headed into their final game against Bedfordshire,
knowing that a draw would be enough. But they cruised to victory,
winning 11-6 despite dropping 5 shots in the last couple of ends,
and took the title with maximum points.
TRIPLES
Neil & Keith Jolly and Sue Gilder (Brockley/Barking)
The first match of the day was nip and tuck all the way, with
Suffolk taking until the 7th end to get their noses in front,
only to drop the last 2 ends to lose the game 7-5.
And it was a similar story
against Hertfordshire. The lead switched back and forth between
the two teams, but although Suffolk held a single shot lead going
into the last end the opposition took 3 shots to come through
and win the game 8-6.
Their third game of the day,
against Cambridgeshire, brought a much brighter start as they
took 4 on the first end, but Cambridgeshire won 4 of the next
5 ends, picking up 9 shots along the way, to lead 9-5 with 3
to go, although the game was still very much within reach. Suffolk
ground away at the deficit, but their opponents were able to
restrict them to just a shot an end and although they came close
it was a third loss, 8-9.
The fourth game of the day
came against Essex and finally brought a long overdue win, and
a convincing one at that. Into the lead from the start, they
were never headed and strolled to a 12-2 win.
Although the damage had already
been done with the early losses Suffolk were finishing well and
took a comfortable 14-5 win over Bedfordshire. That brought them
up into a 4th place finish, although because all the teams ahead
of them lost their last games, they only ended up 2 points off
the winners.
PAIRS
Andy Pooley & David O'Brien (Gt
Blakenham)
The opening game against Cambridgeshire saw them 5-2 down after
5 ends, but clawing their way back to level going into the last
and then getting a fortunate edge with Andy's final wood to take
the game 6-5.
Although it was close for much
of their second game, against Essex, Suffolk were never behind
and by the final end they had enough of a lead that they were
able to drop 3 shots and still win 9-6.
A slow start for Suffolk in
their next game, against Bedfordshire. Each of the first 4 ends
were lost, but crucially only by a single shot on each, which
mean that when they found their feet the game was quickly in
their grasp. They were level at six ends and had their noses
well in front on the next. They won all the remaining ends and
finished 10-4 up.
Overall they were tied for
the lead with Hertfordshire. However at this point Craig (Herts)
was taken ill and had to withdraw. With their results scratched
Suffolk were now 2 points in the lead.
With their final game against
Hertfordshire now not taking place, their last game would be
against Norfolk, who would still have a game still to play after
this one. Norfolk were just 2 points behind and held a shot advantage,
and despite having effectively played one game less could still
win the event at this stage. Whoever won the game would take
the title.
It was close at the start as
the two teams won alternate ends, then Suffolk edged ahead in
the middle of the game, only for their lead to be wiped out on
the 8th end. They could have lost their nerve, but they didn't,
taking the last end to win 9-7. The others still had a game to
play, but David and Andy had the title sewn up, taking 4 wins
out of 4 and finishing 4 points clear of the next best team.
SINGLES
David Ford (Gt Blakenham)
The first game of the day, against Cambridgeshire, was never
going to be easy and David was behind from the first, finally
recording a 9-4 loss.
Next up was Essex, who made
by far the best start, taking a 5 shot lead after only 2 ends,
and although a comeback was on the cards more than once, David's
opponent always managed to get something in, leaving him with
a second loss as he went down 10-6.
After a slow start, losing
the first two ends, David was well ahead of his next opponent,
from Bedfordshire, as he took 8 shots in the space of 3 ends.
But the next 3 ends went the other way and going into the last
end his lead was down to just one shot. However, on an end which
went back and forth, he came through with his final wood to go
from 3 down to 2 up and take his first win of the day, 10-7.
Another win for David, this
time over Norfolk, the middle part of the game went his way and
he took an 11-6 win.
For his final game David's
faced Hertfordshire. He started well and led 4-0 after 2 ends,
but the lead was gone after 5 ends and he was behind one later
and was unable to get back, losing 10-6 to finish on 4 points
and in 4th place.
TEAM
It was a slow start to the day for Suffolk. While the Four and
Pair were getting the wins, the Triple and Single were losing,
all of which left Suffolk in the middle of the standings. However
the withdrawal of Hertfordshire from the Pairs and the resultant
scratching of their results meant that Herts, who had been leading
the way, dropped them out of the running and suddenly Suffolk
were catapulted to the top.
After that, as the Triple started
to win, they began to edge ahead, finally finishing on 28 points,
4 ahead of second placed Cambridgeshire.
A good day for Suffolk saw
them secure the Fours, Pairs and Team titles.
