Steven chipped away at Ann, one shot at a time for the first 6 ends, winning 6-2. And Neil did much the same against Pete, coming home to a 7-3 win.

Neil's game against Ann went much the same way as his first, winning 8-1. Steven, looking for his second win was going well at 4-1 up with 2 ends to go, but Pete levelled the game on the 6th and took another 3 on the last to snatch the win.

That left Neil ahead on 4 points with Steven and Pete on 2, each with one game to play.

With Ann running out to an 11-2 win over Pete, his chances were over. Meanwhile Steven needed to beat Neil and do so by 6 shots. Things started well, 4 up after 3 ends which Neil pegged back by 2 only for Steven to take 3 on the fifth. That meant he led 7-2 which meant that they were tied. However it was Neil that scored on the 6th, just one shot but it was crucial. And Neil started the final end better, finding the jack and cutting out Steven's best. They both knew what was needed and Neil did what was necessary, taking 2 to win the group by 3 shots.

This group was already down to just 2 contenders after the first games. Andy motored away to a 15-0 win over David and Sam took the first 6 ends against Gordon for a 12-1 win.

Andy took another convincing win, this time against Gordon, finishing 13-1 up. Meanwhile, having trailed for most of the game, David grabbed a 3 on the last end to beat Sam 6-5.

Andy led the group comfortably on 4 points with a game to go, 2 points and 10 shots ahead of Sam and 2 points and 21 shots ahead of David.

While David romped away to a 15-2 win over Gordon, Andy knew that all he needed to do was to keep his game with Sam close, which he did, securing a 5-5 draw on the last end.

Final
Neil Jolly
(Brockley) v Andy Pooley (Gt Blakenham)
End 1 – A good third wood from Neil takes shot away from Andy and gives him 3.
End 2 – Both players are struggling to come to terms with the big swing but Andy just nudges his nearest 2 with his final wood and both hold. Neil leads 3-2.
End 3 – Andy holds and Neil plays to move the jack back, which it does, a long way, but not quite off. It just hangs on to the edge for 3. A massive bit of good fortune sees him 6-2 up.
End 4 – Andy's holding 2 and now Neil is short with his last, but Andy is heavy and doesn't add to his tally, but the end is his. 6-4 to Neil.
End 5 – With Andy holding, Neil gets the jack back to hold, but Andy draws shot and Neil is too long with his last. 6-5.
End 6 – Neil holds but with his last Andy plays the shot wood out to hold 2 and he takes the lead for the first time in the game. 7-6.
End 7 – Andy is on the jack with his first, close with his second and off the side with his third. But Neil cannot detatch the jack from that initial wood of Andy's. His final wood makes contact again, but the jack does not finish well. It's 2 more to Andy and he takes the game 9-6.

Cockfield began with a very convincing 15-2 win over Withersfield while in the all Barking game 'B' just held on to edge out 'A' 6-5.

Barking A and Cockfield were close with 2 ends to go, but a 4 for Cockfield rocketed them into the lead and they held on for a 6-5 win. Meanwhile Barking B had also taken a 4 to go into the lead against Withersfield, but on what was to be the last end they dropped 3, handing Withersfield the win.

Cockfield led the group with 4 points while Barking B and Withersfield were on 2 and each had an outside chance.

Withersfield had an outside chance if they could secure a big in against Barking A, but fell to an 8-2 loss. For Barking B to make it they would need to beat Cockfield by 9 shots, but they were no match for the team that had already won both of their games. Cockfield ran out 12-2 winners to comfortably take the group.

Two convincing wins made it a two horse race at this early stage. Blakenham ran out 12-1 winners over Chelmondiston, while Kelsale led all the way to beat Withersfield 13-3.

A close game between Blakenham and Withersfield at 5 ends became a 9-4 win for Blakenham as they dominated the last 2 ends. And Kelsale recovered from an early defecit to hold on for a 7-5 win.

Blakenham and Kelsale would fight it out for the group win with Blakenham holding a tiny, but crucial 1 shot lead.

Withersfield were out of the blocks quickly in their final game and took a 12-7 win over Chelmondiston. For Kelsale nothing but a win would do for them, while Blakenham could take a draw and qualify. But the game was never destined to be that close. Four on the first end for Blakenham set the tone as them took a crushing 19-0 win to finish on maximum points.

Final
Cockfield (Colin & Peter Fellingham)
v Gt Blakenham (Steven Cain & David Ford)
End 1 – Peter drops a wood onto the jack which hangs on in there until Steven is able to play it away and take one.
End 2 – Peter is just in behind this time, Steven moves the jack but can't capitalise. Colin draws in twice and Cockfield take 3 to lead 3-1.
End 3 – Cockfield hold the advantage all the way through the end and take another 3. 6-1.
End 4 - Another early wood from Peter can't be budged until Steven finds a way through with weight, the jack finishes in a good place for him and he takes 2. 6-3.
End 5 – Now Blakenham start to get their act together. David is matching Peter and they get another 2 back. 6-5.
End 6 – Shot wood moves back and forth but Colin now outdraws Steven twice to re-extend their lead and stop Blakenham's momentum. 8-5.
End 7 – Peter's first two woods are inch perfect, one behind, one in front and the third resting the front one. It's looking impossible for Blakenham. Steven manages to disrupt the head but Colin's answer is just to draw shot, cutting out Blakenham's best wood and leaving them no chance to get 3. Weight doesn't work, Colin draws another and it's all over. 10-5.

Hoggards were off to marginally the best start. Four on the third end against Barking was crucial as they hung on with a last wood saver to win 9-7. Meanwhile Blakenham cam back from 6-3 down with 2 ends to go, to win 8-6.

The second set of games saw Nayland come from behind to finish strongly against Hoggards for an 8-3 win. And Barking and Blakenham, in a close fought game finished 5-5.

That left Blakenham top on 3 points, but both Hoggards and Nayland, one point behind, could still win the group.

Barking started slowly against Nayland but came through to win 9-6. However Blakenham took a huge 16-2 win over Hoggards to win the group comfortably.

Knodishall started with a very convincing 13-2 win over Hoggards, while Barking's 8-3 win over Claydon was not as straightforward as the final score would suggest.

The two winning teams from the first set of games won again. Knodishall and Claydon were 3-3 at 4 ends, but some big shots from the Knodishall skip got them out of trouble and took shots as they finished 9-3 winners. Barking started well but were pegged back by Hoggards, but they came through to win 7-5.

The group would be settled in the final game between Barking and Knodishall, although Knodishall's shot advantage would mean that a draw would be good enough for them.

Claydon took a big win against Hoggards, 13-1 to finish strongly. Meanwhile, in the game that would settle the group Barking and Knodishall played out a close fought game. Barking took a shot each on the first 2 ends. Knodishall took 2 each on the next 2. Barking levelled the game but Knodishall converted a 3 shot defecit on the 6th to one shot up with their last wood to go into the final end one up, knowing that a draw would do. And that was how it looked to be heading early on, but Barking slowly improved their position as the end progressed and at the end Knodishall found themselves 3 down and unable to improve their situation as Barking took a 7-5 win to finish top of the group.

Final
Gt Blakenham (Steven & Heather Cain, Andy Pooley and David Ford)
v Barking (Andy & Sue Gilder and Mick & Shirley Watkins)
End 1 – Blakenham hold and Barking cannot budge the shot wood. 1-0 to Blakenham.
End 2 – With Blakenham holding again, Andy moves the jack back to where all their early woods had finished. Steven misses with his last and it's a massive haul of 6 shots. Is that game over already? 6-1 to Barking.
End 3 – Heather draws the jack to give Blakenham 2. All Andy can do is graze the jack but it's locked in. Maybe it's not all over. 6-3.
End 4 – With Blakenham holding Andy plays a perfect chip in from the side to take shot, Steven is forced to play weight and goes 2 down. 8-3.
End 5 – Blakenham are chasing the game now. The jack is moved but Barking still hold and despite Steven's best efforts it's one more to Barking and now Blakenham's position begins to look irretreivable. 9-3.
End 6 – Blakenham are holding, but they can't do anything to pick up more than one. 9-4.
End 7 – All Barking need to do now is control the head, get something into second place and cover the opposition's woods. But they do more than that, taking 2 shots and the title. 11-4

Suffolk Singles 2015/2016

There were 76 entries fro this year's event and with limited space at Needham Market and only one day in which to play the qualifying event, it was necessary to divide the day into two parts.

And in order to accomodate people's choices as to when they wanted to play, there were 48 playing in the morning from which there would be 5 qualifiers for Finals Day and 28 playing in the afternoon, with 3 qualifiers

MORNING SESSION

Group 1
Ann Blundell
(Hoggards Green) breezed through the group with 3 wins out of 3, while all the other teams won one and lost two games.

Group 2
Don Allum
(Gt Blakenham) took the group with maximum points. Second place went to Margaret Holland (Hoggards Green) with 4 points & 22 shots qualified safely.

Group 3
It was maximum points for Gordon Bloomfield (Knodishall) who won the group ahead of Jim Goodrich (Claydon) who finished on 4 points and 25 shots, he too qualified.

Group 4
Both Peter Fellingham (Cockfield D) and Lin Cooke (Withersfield B), having drawn against one another earlier on in the day, won their final games to finish on 5 points. Lin finished on 27 shots, 7 ahead of Peter, to win the group, but both were safely through.

Group 5
John Whiting
(Knodishall) won all three games to head the group, while Sally Goodrich (Claydon) finished second with 4 points & 20 shots and also went through.

Group 6
A close fought group saw everyone head into their final games having won one and lost one. In the end it was Clint Watling (Claydon A) and Kay Masters (Kelsale) who took their second wins. Clint's 20 shots gave him the group win to go through while Kay missed out.

Group 7
Neil Jolly
(Brockley) eased through to the group win, taking all 3 games comfortably. Steve Isles (Claydon) was runner-up on 4 points, but didn't have enough shots to progress any further.

Group 8
Three players finished on 4 points in the closest group of the lot. Neil West (Thurston) finished first on 28 shots, 5 ahead of Keith Hull (Tuddenham) who also qualified. Geoff Holland (Hoggards Green) just missed out by a couple of shots.

Group 9
David Ford
(Gt Blakenham) took a comfortable group win with maximum points, dropping just 3 shots in 3 games. Sue Isles (Claydon) made it through in second with 4 points and 21 shots.

Group 10
Rita Daniels
(Kelsale) headed the group with 3 wins, while David Tennant (Old Felixstowe) also made it through on 4 points and 30 shots.

Group 11
Pete Runnacles
(Barking) and Gilbert Lakey (Chelmondiston) both won 2 and lost 1. Pete finished 3 shots better than Gilbert, but both were through.

Group 12
Rita Runnacles
(Barking) won all three of her games to comfortably win the group, while the rest all won one and lost two games.

Knockout Round 1
Jim Goodrich
had ground out a 6-0 lead after 5 ends, but Don Allum struck back with 4 to go into the last end just 2 behind. And he was holding enough to take the game to an extra end, but Jim came in to take shot and win the game 7-4.

Keith Hull was off to a good start against Gordon Bloomfield, 4-1 up after 4 ends, but Gordon came back, winning the last 3 ends to edge a 5-4 win.

After Sue Isles got a shot on both of the first 2 ends, Lin Cooke motored through into the lead, finishing the winner 9-4.

Margaret Holland got off to a great start against John Whiting and never looked back, comfortably winning 9-2.

Clint Watling led his encounter with Ann Blundell most of the way. At 5 ends he was 4-2 up, but the tide turned and Ann took the last 2 ends to finish a 5-4 winner.

Midway through the game between Neil Jolly and David Tennant it was close, 4-2 to Neil, but over the next couple of ends he added another 4 shots, before taking the game 8-4.

A good start for Neil West, 3 on the first end, didn't last long. Sally Goodrich was level on the next and then ahead. Neil, only 2 behind, still had a chance going into the last end, but Sally got it to win 9-4.

David Ford swept to a 7-0 lead after only 3 ends, but Rita Daniels fought back to level the game on the 6th end. However David held his nerve to take the last end and win 10-7.

The closest of games came with Pete Runnacles playing Peter Fellingham. Pete was 5-2 up with 2 ends to go, but Peter won those last 2 to level the game at 5-5. However the extra end went Pete's way and he took the game 8-5.

Rita Runnacles led from start to finish against Gilbert Lakey and although it was close at the halfway mark, she finished a comfortable 8-3 winner.

Second Round
It was a close fought match between Neil Jolly and Jim Goodrich, just one per end for the first 5, with just one ahead. But the 6th end saw Neil take 3 and all but put the game out of Jim's reach. Despite Neil's best efforts he couldn't take the jack off the carpet on the final end, but Jim couldn't get more than one shot and Neil took the game 6-3.

It was also nip and tuck between Gordon Bloomfield and Sally Goodrich, with Sally holding a 4-2 lead with 3 ends to go. However Gordon came back bit by bit and leveled the game with one end to go. And with one wood each to bowl Gordon held one with his wood on the front of the jack while Sally had 3 sitting behind. And despite the end being completely open Gordon decided to go nowhere near the head, leaving his last wood short to block one side. Sally's last was a draw, knowing that a touch ought to give her short, and she almost got it, but Gordon's wood stayed in to win 5-4.

David Ford was off to another good start, this time against Lin Cooke. He was 5-0 up after 2 and 8-2 up after 4. That allowed him to defend his lead, dropping the last 3 ends, but only by one shot on each and winning 8-5.

Pete Runnacles had a great start, winning the first 5 ends against Margaret Holland to go 6-0 in front. But it wasn't quite over. Margaret hit back with 3 on the 6th and almost drew level on the last, but she could only get 2 and so it was Pete that hung on for a 6-5 win.

At 5-2 up after 4 ends things looked good for Rita Runnacles, who was playing Ann Blundell. But Ann pulled it back, one at a time to draw level on the final end. And with her last wood on the extra end took shot with a great draw which Rita couldn't quite dislodge with her last as Ann won 6-5.

AFTERNOON SESSION

Group 1
Steven Cain
(Gt Blakenham) won the group with 3 wins out of 3. Jane Sago (Burstall) picked up 2 wins to finish second and qualify.

Group 2
Both Alan Smith (Hoggards Green) and K Gillett (Bildeston) finished on 4 points, Alan took the group win by 3 shots.

Group 3
Andy Pooley
(Gt Blakenham) finished top with maximum points while Sam Runnacles (Barking) was runner-up on 4 points and qualified comfortably.

Group 4
Stan Aldous
(Barking) won all his games, and the group. Paul Cousins (Bildeston) took 2 wins to finish second and qualify.

Group 5
Tom Runnacles
(Barking) won his three games. Richard Sago (Burstall) won two but didn't have enough shots to qualify.

Group 6
Tony Finch
(Nacton) won the group with wins, three points clear of second place.

Group 7
Paul Daniels
(Kelsale) won all his games to take the group. June Petitt's (Cockfield) 4 points and 26 shots saw her through as a best runner-up.

Knockout Round 1
Steven Cain
against Tom Runnacles looked like a close game on paper and it was close, until the 3rd end when Steven picked up all 4 shots to go into a 6-1 lead. After that Tom was chasing the game, but Steven was always in control, winning 8-2.

Alan Smith was a shot behind to Paul Cousins after 3 ends, but won the rest as he ran out a 9-3 winner.

June Petitt was all square with Andy Pooley at 5 ends, but Andy took the last 2 ends to finish 7-4 ahead.

Stan Aldous was 3-2 down to Jane Sago after 4 ends, but took the last 3 for an comfortable 8-3 win.

Tony Finch started well against K Gillett, although he was only 3-2 up at 4 ends. But he never lost the lead, taking the last 3 ends for a 9-2 win.

Sam Runnacles was off to a great start against Paul Daniels, winning each of the first 4 ends to pile up an 8-0 lead. And although Paul then started to play it was too late by then, by the last end he needed all 4 to draw level and could only get 3. Sam won 8-7.

Second Round
Steven Cain
was off to a flier against Stan Aldous, 6-0 up after 3 ends. But Stan won the next 2, bringing it back to 6-4 and giving himself a chance, but those hopes were cut short as Steven took the last 2 ends to win 10-4.

Sam Runnacles was off to the best possible start against Alan Smith, taking all 4 on the first end. Alan clawed his way back to 5-3 with 2 ends to go, but Sam held steady, coming home to an 8-3 win.

And it was also a good start for Andy Pooley who was comfortably 7-0 up with 4 ends played against Tony Finch. Although Tony got on the board on the next end, Andy won the sixth and at 8-3 it was game over.

Suffolk Pairs II 2015/2016

Week 2 of qualifying saw 35 teams playing in 7 groups. The winners, runners-up and 2 best third placed teams would qualify for the Knockout Stages. They would play down to the last 4 and join the winners from Week 1 on Finals Day.

Group 1
Barking C won their first three games comfortably and had won their group with a game still to play. Withersfield D took the runner-up spot with 6 points.

Group 2
In a closely fought group Chelmondiston C came out on top with 6 points, second place went to Bealings (5 points & 29 shots), while Old Newton D (5 points & 24 shots) made it through as the best third placed team.

Group 3
Withersfield A finished top, winning all of their games, while second place went to Badwell Ash B who finished on 6 points.

Group 4
Knodishall C won three of their four games to take the group. And two wins and a draw for Withersfield B was good enough for them to take second. The group also produced the second and final third placed qualifier, but more of that later.

Group 5
Old Newton A won their first three games and qualified before going on to lose their last game, although they still won the group, finishing one shot better than runners-up Hoggards Green C.

Group 6
Chelmondiston D opened with 3 comfortable wins to make their way through to the knockout stages with a game still to play. And they made it four wins out of four to win the group. Meanwhile Withersfield C took three wins to finish in second.

Group 7
Hoggards Green A qualified with 3 wins and a loss, while Old Felixstowe A recorded two wins and a draw from their first three games to qualify, despite losing their final game.

The final team to qualify would be the second best third placed team. And it was close. It came down to Nacton/Bealings (Group 4) and Knodishall A (Group 6). They both won two games and lost two. They both scored 27 shots and they both conceded 22 shots. So it had to come down to ends won over their four games. Knodishall A won 15 ends and Nacton/Bealings won 16 ends and so qualified by the very narrowest of margins.

KNOCKOUT ROUNDS
ROUND 1
Knodishall C v Hoggards Green C

2-1 down Knodishall took what looked like a decisive 3 on the third end. But Hoggards Green took them all back on the next. The whistle was blown on the 6th, but Knodishall took 2 shots to come from behind and win 6-5.
Withersfield B v Badwell Ash B
3 to Withersfield on the 4th end gave them a 5-1 lead, that was down to 5-3 going into the last end, but another 3 for Withersfield saw them home 8-3.
Withersfield A v Withersfield C
A run of 8 shots over 3 ends in the middle of the match saw 'A' grab a substantial lead and it saw them home to a 9-6 win.
Chelmondiston C v Old Felixstowe A
Although Chelmondiston took the first end, that was the only one they won. Old Felixstowe took the game 8-1.
Old Newton A v Old Newton B
Another inter-club match saw 'A' with a good 6-2 advantage with 2 ends to go. But 'B' leveled it on the next end and took one on the last to go through with a 7-6 win.
Chelmondiston D v Withersfield D
It was a 4 on the 4th end that won Chelmondiston the game. That gave them a 3 shot advantage which they held on to, winning 7-4.
Hoggards Green A v Bealings
Bealings had a 3-1 lead having won the second end, but Hoggards won the rest of them to take an 8-3 win.
Barking C v Nacton/Bealings
The first 4 ends all went the way of Barking as they built up an 8-0 lead. The oppostion took the next 2 ends, but they were never going to get back into the game which went 9-3 to Barking.

ROUND 2
Knodishall C v Chelmondiston D

Two shots on the first end for Knodishall turned out to be a false dawn. Chelmondiston took the rest of the ends to come home convincing 10-2 winners.
Withersfield B v Old Newton B
Three on the 4th end to Withersfield made was the different between the two teams. They did enough to hold on for a 6-3 win.
Withersfield A v Hoggards Green A
3 shots apiece after 2 ends, Withersfield then ran out to a 10-3 lead. But Hoggards gave themselves a glimmer of hope on the 6th end with 4 to bring it back to 10-7 and with their final wood moved the jack to hold 3. However Withersfield did exactly what was required with their last wood, taking the shot and the game, 11-7.
Old Felixstowe A v Barking C
The lead moved back and forth over the first few ends and after the fifth it was 4-3 to Old Felixstowe. But on the 6th, with the jack pushed to the back of the mat, Old Felixstowe fell short with their final woods and allowed Barking 3 shots. The final end was just a question of keeping close to the jack, which Barking did, winning 7-4.

Suffolk Pairs I 2015/2016

With too many entries to be able to play the qualifying event on a single day, the Pairs was played over 2 consecutive Sundays. The first week saw 37 teams playing in 8 groups with the winners and runners-up going through to the knockout stages which were played down to the last 4. Those teams would them join the qualifiers from week 2 on Finals Day.

Group 1
Barking E had all but won the group as they notched up 3 wins from their first 3 games. They went one to make it 4 out of 4 to finish top. Behind them Bramford A only needed a point from their last game to qualify but a win made doubly sure.

Group 2
In a group where one team had dropped out, Kelsale A & Gt Blakenham A had qualified before they had played one another. That game went to Kelsale who consequently won the group.

Group 3
Winning their first 3 games meant that Brockley had already had qualified as winners, as there were only 4 teams in the group. Barking D lost just the one game and finished runners-up.

Group 4
Cockfield A recorded 2 wins and a draw to lead the group with 3 games played. They finished with another win to take the group with 7 points. The final group game would produce the runners-up as Claydon B played Witnesham/Bealings and it was the latter team that won to go through.

Group 5
Barking B and Hundon D both had three wins out of four to qualify. But Barking won the group by a margin of 5 shots.

Group 6
Another close group with first and second places separated by 5 shots. It was Brantham A who cam top with 6 points and 31 shots, ahead of Barking A who had 6 points and 26 shots.

Group 7
Gt Blakenham B came through the group undefeated, taking 3 wins and a draw, while Tuddenham's 3 wins and 6 points made them runners-up.

Group 8
Nayland B's 3 wins out of 4 gave them the group win, while Kelsale C (5 points & 34 shots) edged out Bramford B (5 points & 24 shots) for second.

KNOCKOUT ROUNDS
ROUND 1
Brockley v Witnesham/Bealings

4 shots for Brockley on the first end gave them a good start and a lead which they, just about, held on to as they finished 6-4 winners.
Cockfield A v Barking D
Another game that started with a 4, this one went to Cockfield, who followed up with another 4 on the next end. After that they cruised home to a 13-1 win.
Barking B v Barking A
'B' took the first 3 ends for a 4-0 lead, but it was a 3 on the 5th to put them solidly ahead, 7-2. 'A' won the last 2 ends, but still finished 7-5 down.
Brantham A v Hundon D
A good start for Hundon saw them 7-1 up afer 4 ends. Brantham needed all 6 on the last end to go into extra time, but could only manage 3. Hundon went through 9-6 winners.
Gt Blakenham B v Kelsale C
After dropping on the first end Kelsale edged their way into a 4-1 lead after 5 ends. Blakenham finally scored another shot on the 6th and made the most of good early woods on the last to come through and overtake their opposition, winning 6-4.
Nayland B v Tuddenham
Tuddenham had the best of their opponents for most of the game and with 2 ends to go were 6-1 up. But Nayland struck back with a 4 on the 6th and 2 more on the 7th to take the win 7-6.
Barking E v Gt Blakenham A
A 4 on the third end saw Blakenham open up a good lead and 5 ends in they led 7-2. But Barking leapt back into contention with a 4 on the 6th. The final end was close, it needed a measure to decide the outcome and it went to Blakenham as they held on to win 8-6.
Kelsale A v Bramford A
Kelsale took the first 4 ends to lead 6-0 but a 3 on the 5th saw Bramford back in the game. However with time running out the 6th was to be the final end, which Kelsale took to win 8-3.

ROUND 2
Cockfield A v Nayland B
A 5-1 lead in favour of Cockfield was suddenly only 5-4 as Nayland took 3 on the 5th. But Cockfield took them all back on the next and were able to drop one shot on the last and still win 8-5.
Barking B v Gt Blakenham A
At 5-3 down after 3, Blakenham had a golden opportunity on the 4th. Holding one and with last wood a cautious draw would have brought them level, but the wood was too close to their own shot wood, giving it a touch and tickling the jack back to give the oppostion 2 shots. That was the last chance they got as Barking took the win 11-3.
Hundon D v Kelsale A
Hundon started strongly with 3 on the first end. One each over the next 2 ends saw the score at 4-1 after 3. But 2 ends later Kelsale were ahead, a 2 and a 3 gave them a 2 shot lead. Hundon got one back on the 6th but with the jack surrounded by Kelsale on the last, couldn't get close enough to take the game to an extra end. Kelsale winning 7-5.
Brockley v Gt Blakenham B
Brockley made a strong start with 3 on the first but Blakenham leveled the scores on the next end. One for each on the next 2 ends saw the score at 4-4 after 4. The ends were every bit as close as you might imagine, but Blakenham squeezed one shot out of each to lead 6-4. Needing 2 on the last Brockley's final shot would have been fortunate to have succeeded given the way the woods were lying (click here for amateur footage). It didn't and Blakenham went through 7-4 winners.

Suffolk Triples 2015/2016

A total of 34 teams entered the event this year, with the 7 groups producing the 16 qualifiers for the Knockout Stages, with each group winner and runner-up, as well as the 2 best third placed teams going through.

GROUP 1
Knodishall A came through as winners with 6 points, the same as runners-up Cockfield C, who were just behind on shots. Barking A also went through, with 5 points, as the best of the third placed teams.

GROUP 2
Barking/Kelsale finished top, taking 4 wins out of 4, while Hundon A were runners-up on 6 points.

GROUP 3
Brockley/Barking took a clean sweep to finish top, 2 points clear of Cockfield A.

GROUP 4
A closely fought group saw Badwell Ash finish top with 6 points, one ahead of both second placed Hoggards Green A and Bealings, who were the other third placed team to qualify.

GROUP 5
Copdock & Washbrook won all their games, finishing 3 points clear of runners-up Burstall.

GROUP 6
Barking C won three games to finish top of the group, while Cockfield D did enough in their final game to take second spot with 5 points and a couple more shots than Gt Blakenham A, who only just missed out on qualification.

GROUP 7
Withersfield and Gt Blakenham B both finished on 6 points, with Withersfield taking the top spot by 2 shots.

FIRST ROUND
Gt Blakenham B
led all the way to beat Cockfield C 8-2.
Cockfield A came from behind, thanks to a 4 on the 5th end, and hung on to win 6-5 over Withersfield.
Copdock & Washbrook trailed Cockfield D 5-1 after 4 ends, but came back to win 6-5.
Barking C took 3 on the last end to beat Hoggards Green A 7-4.
Burstall lost the first end to Badwell Ash, but pulled ahead and took the game 8-4.
Barking/Kelsale lost an early lead, but came back just held on for a 5-4 win over Bealings.
Knodishall A started slowly against Hundon A, led 6-2 at 5 ends, lost 3 on the next, but took one on the last to win 7-5.
Barking A led reigning champions Brockley/Barking 6-0 after 2 ends, but were 7-6 down 3 ends later. However they drew level and took the game with 2 on the last end, winning 9-7.

QUARTER FINALS
Copdock & Washbrook
took the lead over Cockfield A on the second end and pulled away to win 6-2.
Gt Blakenham B took 4 on the 3rd end against Barking C, getting their noses in front, and holding on to win 7-5.
Barking A were once again up early on, against Knodishall A, only to be behind 3 ends later, but winning the last 3 ends saw them home as 9-5 winners.
Barking/Kelsale pulled out a 5-1 lead with 5 ends played against Burstall, hanging on over the last 2 ends to win 5-3.

SEMI-FINALS
Copdock & Washbrook
had the best of the middle part of their game against Gt Blakenham B, allowing them to gain a 4 shot lead going into the last. Their opposition won the last end, but were only able to add 2 shots to their tally as Copdock won 6-4.
Barking/Kelsale took 3 on the second end to lead 3-1, only for Barking A to draw level on the next. They eked out 2 more shots over 2 ends, lost them on the 6th end, but took 2 on the last to win 7-5.

FINAL
A lucky last wood saw Barking/Kelsale take one on the first end, and they added a second on the next. However Copdock & Washbrook brought themselves level on the third. A big 3 shot count on the 4th end brought Barking/Kelsale nicely ahead again, but again Copdock fought back, two shots brought them back to just one behind.
The 6th end saw Barking/Kelsale somehow hold onto a single shot to edge their lead out to 6-4, going into the last. The seventh saw Copdock sitting with one wood directly in front and one directly behind the jack, as the skips came to bowl, enough to take the game to an extra end. Barking/Kelsale's penultimate wood sailed past the head, but the second somehow squeezed in behind to hold. The final wood from Copdock could have moved the jack out to their receiving woods, but the target was a small one and the shot was missed, leaving Barking/Kelsale 7-4 winners.
