The 2018 Eastern Counties Champions
of Champions event was hosted by Bedfordshire on Sunday 20th
May.
FOURS
Unfortunately the Bedfordshire
team withdrew at the last moment leaving no time to replace them.
Essex were off to a flier with
a 19-4 win over Suffolk while Norfolk beat Cambridgeshire 10-6.
There were comfortable wins for
Hertfordshire (13-4 over Cambridgeshire) and Norfolk (11-1 over
Essex). Norfolk now led the way having won twice, while Herts
had won their only game.
Norfolk made it 3 wins out of
3 but had to work hard to beat Suffolk 12-11, while Hertfordshire
were all square with Essex with 3 ends to go but ended up with
a 14-5 win.
Essex romped home to a 19-4 win
over Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire's start was strong enough
to see them home 13-6 against Suffolk. Herts were now tied with
Norfolk on 6 points and the two teams would be playing one another
in the final game.
While Cambridgeshire picked up
their first win of the day over Suffolk all eyes were on the
other game to settle the destination of the title. Herts began
well but Norfolk held the lead after 4 ends, however that was
as good as it got for Norfolk, they were behind after the 5th
end and Herts went on to take the win 10-7 and the title with
8 points with Norfolk as runners-up.
Winners: Hertfordshire (Jason Ellis, Marilyn Cook, Paul Harris
and Jack Smalley)
TRIPLES Suffolk, Norfolk
and Hertfordshire won their opening games to lead the way, with
Suffolk just ahead on shots.
Suffolk survived a Bedfordshire
comeback to win 11-6, Cambridgeshire's 9-4 win over Hertfordshire
rested mostly on a score of 4 on the 8th end, and Norfolk were
never in trouble as they beat Essex 12-3. Norfolk and Suffolk
were now the only unbeaten teams.
Round 3 saw 3 comfortable wins
for Suffolk, Cambridgeshire and Essex and with Suffolk having
overcome Norfolk they were now leading the way overall.
Norfolk picked up a comfortable
13-2 win over Bedfordshire, after the first few ends Cambridgeshire
pulled away from Essex to win 9-3 and Suffolk grabbed a draw
against Hertfordshire with their final wood to keep the overall
lead, although by just 1 point.
Hertfordshire secured a big win
in their final game against Norfolk and Bedfordshire snatched
a final end victory over Essex. But it was all about Suffolk
(who needed only to draw) and Cambridgeshire (who needed the
win and nothing less). And it was Suffolk who got their noses
in front early on and although Cambs came close it was a win
to Suffolk 7-5 as they finished on 9 points, 3 ahead of both
Cambridgeshire and Norfolk.
Winners: Suffolk (Clint Watling,
Sam Runnacles & Tom Runnacles)
PAIRS Norfolk finished
well to beat Suffolk 10-5, Cambridgeshire were well ahead from
the start and beat Bedfordshire 11-3 and Hertfordshire survived
a late comeback from Essex to win 11-8.
Essex will consider themselves
fortunate to have come away with a win over Cambridgeshire, they
needed 3 on the last end to win 11-10. Norfolk had another comfortable
win, 11-3 over Bedfordshire, as did Suffolk over Hertfordshire,
12-4. Norfolk were now the only unbeaten team.
Cambridgeshire and Essex comfortably
won their games against Suffolk and Bedfordshire respectively
while Norfolk got an early lead over Hertfordshire and maintained
it to remain unbeaten.
Cambridgeshire shook things up
by beating Norfolk 9-5 while Essex were held to a draw by Suffolk
and Hertfordshire beat Bedfordshire 12-2. That left Cambridgeshire
and Norfolk on 6 points, Essex one behind and all three in with
a chance of taking the title.
While Suffolk completed a win
over Bedfordshire all eyes were on the other two games with Cambridgeshire
holding a 6 shot advantage over Norfolk. And Norfolk did pretty
much all they could do, beating Essex 15-3, but it wasn't enough
as Cambridgeshire came home with a 12-3 win over Herts to take
the title by 3 shots.
Winners: Cambridgeshire (Maureen
& Barry Giddens)
SINGLES Suffolk started
well and took a controlled 9-4 win over Norfolk. Bedfordshire
held on for the win over Cambridgeshire 8-7 and after scoring
all 4 on the first end Essex lost 12-5 to Hertfordshire.
Cambridgeshire took all 4 on
the last end to beat Essex 11-7, Hertfordshire and Suffolk played
out a predictable draw (6-6) and Norfolk were always ahead of
Bedfordshire, winning 8-4. Hertfordshire and Suffolk topped the
standings on 3 points each.
Hertfordshire and Essex were
comfortable winners while Suffolk were behind to Cambridgeshire
early on and never able to get back on terms. Hertfordshire now
led by one point over Cambridgeshire.
As Hertfordshire fell to an unexpected
loss to Beds, Cambridgeshire had a big win over Norfolk and Suffolk
beat Essex. Cambridgeshire were now one point clear of Hertfordshire
and Suffolk whose shot deficit was such that the destination
of the title would probably rest on the Cambridgeshire/Hertfordshire
game.
While Essex and Suffolk won the
title would be decided by the result of the remaining game. Cambridgeshire
were off to a good start, picking up 6 over the first 3 ends,
just about retaining that lead and then pulling off a perfect
draw with the last wood to win the game 8-6 and beating Suffolk
to the title by one point.
Winner: Cambridgeshire (David
Folkes)
TEAM Norfolk and
Hertfordshire led the way early on with 6 points each after the
first round of games.
Norfolk had pulled away to a
comfortable lead after the second round of games was completed,
they were on 14 points with Suffolk and Herts their nearest rivals
on 9 points.
As the event passed the halfway
mark Norfolk were still 5 points out in front of Hertfordshire,
with Cambridgeshire one point further back.
With the fourth round of games
over Norfolk still led, but their advantage had shrunk with Cambridgeshire
and Hertfordshire breathing down their necks only 2 points behind
and with a shot advantage.
With 2 wins and a second place
it was Cambridgeshire who won overall with 24 points, 2 ahead
of both Herts (who took second on shots) and Norfolk.
Winner: Cambridgeshire
