Fours 2017/18
Sunday the 25th saw 18 teams
play for the title at Barton le Clay, they were drawn into 3
groups of 6 with the group winners and best runner up to proceed
to the semi-finals.
Group A
After three games this group was led by the defending Champions
from Barton skipped by Neil Rixon with three wins could
they be stopped? They won their final two games to go through
on 10 points.
Group B
The Turvey rink skipped by Keith Cockings were 8 points
after 4 sessions but with everyone else tripping over each other
they had qualified so a final defeat by Maulden wasnt a
disaster as they progressed.
Group C
The closest of the groups saw Toddington and Ravensden skipped
by Sue Bullins and Mike Dowse fighting to win the group and tied
after 3 sessions on 5 points. Neither could win both their final
games to take group so finished on 7 points each. Shot count
would sort this and Ravensden went through on +15.
The best runne- up to progress from the 3 groups was Sue Bullins'
Toddington team on 7 points.
Semi-Finals
Ravensden (Mike Dowse) v Toddington (Sue Bullins)
This match saw a repeat of the group game but was much closer
after 4 ends and it was 2-2 with three to play. Who could get
the advantage? Toddington edged a single on the 5th end then
2 on the sixth saw them 5-2 up and then a close end saw Toddington
take another single to win 6-2.
Barton (Neil Rixon ) v Turvey (Keith Cockings)
After 4 ends Barton held a 6-2 lead the 5th end saw the Turvey
skip in trouble, 1 down with his last wood to go, he played a
running bowl and saw the shot wood pushed onto jack only to lose
a count of 4 and go 10-2 down. The 6th end saw Turvey take the
4 back to trail 10-6 but the margin was too much and they could
only 2 shots, Barton win 10-8.
Final
Barton (Barrie Nunn, Ron Worsnop, Leslie Nunn & Neil Rixon)
v Toddington (Gill Whitfield, Pauline Hanson, David Whitfeld
and Sue Bullins)
End 1. Oh my!! Both leads go and there's nothing on mat as
final carpet is fast and takes them by surprise. Ron nails it
with his 2nd though, and as both skips play Neil draws a second
then a third as Barton lead 3-0.
End 2. Barrie and Ron find the jack to hold three but
Leslie knocks the closest Toddington wood in to cut it to a single.
Sue narrowly misses the head and Barton lead 4-0.
End 3. Leslie finds the jack to hold two but David removes
one of them and then Sue clips the jack across to her own wood
to take a single but is unable to draw her last in for a two
so Barton lead 4-1.
End 4. Gill is in on the jack and this wood holds despite
all efforts to move it Toddington take another single. 4-2.
End 5. Barrie holds shot and then Ron eases Paulines
bowl out to make it two, then with the two skips to play Sue
is fortunate to be only two down as she hits middle twice and
Neil cannot capitalise so two it's 6-2.
End 6. The jack is pushed towards the box but Ron finds
it and David pushes in a second in his attempt to get close Barton
take 2 more shots. 8-2.
End 7. Ron draws shot but Leslie is a bit tight and and
clips the jack to Toddington. David draws in and falls on the
jack, pinching it between black and brown to make a dead end.
Neil then eases the brown off to take two shots and a 10-2 lead.
End 8. Toddington hold four as David pushes the nearest
Barton wood away, Neil cuts it to one and then with his final
bowl knocks jack to his back wood for a single and to take match
11-2.
Well done to Barton on defending their title and to everyone
for a fabulous days bowling

Triples 2017/18
Bedfordshire County Carpet Bowls
Triples took place on 4th March at a snowy Barton le Clay. 24
teams were split into 4 groups with only the winners to progress
into the Semi-Finals.
Group A
At the half way point N Rixon (Barton), T Meredith (Clophill)
and M Walker (Colmworth) all had 4 points from 3 games so it
was who could get 2 wins that would progress. The Meredith team
beat the Rixon triple who then beat the Walker team to leave
the Meredith trio to take the group on 8 points.
Group B
P Baynes (Cople) and M Rogers (Turvey) were on 5 points after
3 games being chased by G Buttrum (Cotton End). The Baynes trio
faded losing their final 2 games, the Rogers drew one and won
one to put them on 8 points but the Buttrum trio produced 2 wins
to end up on 8 points as well. The count up saw the Rogers into
semi on shot difference.
Group C
S Macdonald (Cotton End) had 3 wins after 3 games but the others
were all beating each other and a draw then a final win saw the
Macdonald trio home with 9 points.
Group D
Two teams were in with a shout here, G Savage (Clophill) and
A Hatton (Turvey). It was decided, though, by the game they played
against each other as the Hatton trio won it and had 10 points
to go through.
Semi-Finals
T Meredith (Clophill) v M Rogers (Turvey)
The Clophill trio took the first 2 ends to lead 2-0 but then
lost 5 on the third to trail 2-5 another single saw Turvey 2-6
up but Clophill fought back with 2 singles to go into last end
trailing 4-6. The last end saw a good lead from Clophill and
the pressure told as a couple of wayward Turvey woods saw Clophill
take 3 shots and the match.
S Macdonald (Cotton End) v A Hatton (Turvey)
Turvey shot out of the blocks here and were 10-0 up after 3 ends.
A single to Cotton End on fourth end made it 10-1 but two more
singles to Turvey saw the game up after 6 ends 12-1.
Final
Jenny Skoines, Paul Hurren, Andrew Hatton (Turvey) v
Sue Meredith, Sheila Hall, Tony Meredith (Clophill)
End 1 - Clophill are a bit wayward and Andrew puts his final
wood in close to lead 2-0.
End 2 - Turvey hold a single as the skips bowl. Tony has
a disaster hitting middle twice but Turvey only get a single.
3-0.
End 3 - A wild end with bowls everywhere but Clophill
hold 1 and the score is now 3-1.
End 4 - Sue draws in first wood and beats Jennys
2, Paul then wriggles a short bowl into shot. Sheila attempts
to move it but it goes the wrong way and Andrew pushes another
in for 3. 6-1.
End 5 - Clophill hold 2 as Andrew runs into the head and
clips the jack to his black on the side. Tony runs the black
off and picks up 2 shots. 6-3.
End 6 - Turvey hold 2 shots after Paul finds the Jack
but neither skip alters the head so it's 2 shots and the score
is now 8-3.
End 7 - Clophill hold 2 but Andrew clips the jack to the
side to hold 2. Tony attempts to move the wood but is tight and
he pushes another in to make it 3 again. 11-3.
End 8 - Clophill need a big count but Turvey are wise
to this. Paul draws in for 2 and then they cover the Clophill
woods to take 2 shots and the title 13-3.
Well done to both teams another excellent final played in a fantastic
manner.
Finally thanks for all coming on a snowy day your support was
appreciated by the organisers.

Pairs 2017/18
Sunday 7th January saw 32 pairs
take to the mats at Barton to see who would be Pairs Champions.
There were 8 groups of 4 playing with the Group Winners to go
through to the Quarter Finals.
Group A
The mixed pair of Nathan Salvidge and Mathew Hatton went
through with a draw and win after a team was lost when a player
failed to turn up resulting in a bye in the group .
Group B
This was dominated by the Turvey pair of Keith Cockings and
Andrew Hatton with 3 decent wins they took the group.
Group C
After a close first game the Arthur Rosie and John O'Brien
pair sailed through unbeaten.
Group D
Susan and George Savage were never in trouble in the 3 games
unbeaten scoring 46 shots in the process.
Group E
This was closer after the Carol and Tom Still sat on 4pts they
had to wait to see if Paul Hurren and Mick Rogers could
win their final game to get level on points and win on shot difference,
which they did.
Group F
Another close group but after losing their first game Jim
Edwards and Dave Whitfield took the group with two wins.
Group G
This group looked close and so it was Sue and Tony Meredith had
4pts so did Peter Crump and Jan Webbley so it was count up time.
And it turned out that they were level on shots for, against
and difference, so a one end shoot-out was needed which the Crump/Webbley
pair took on a very close end.
Group H
Trevor Tumber and Gill Whitfield were in charge in the group,
although it wasn't always comfortable, with some narrow wins,
but they did go through unbeaten.
Quarter Finals
Mathew Hatton/Nathan Salvidge v Paul Hurren/Mick Rogers
Battle of the young and old here saw them tied at 5-5 but a decisive
3 shots to Hurren/Rogers saw them ease away and despite their
opponents best efforts they recorded a 10-8 victory.
John O'Brien/Arthur Rosie v JanWebbley/Peter Crump
This match was nip and tuck until the whistle went when they
were 5-5, but a 5 on the final end saw O'Brien/Rosie take the
game.
Susan and George Savage v Gill Whitfield/Trevor Tumber
The Savage pair romped to victory in this with a resounding 17-2
scoreline.
Jim Edwards/Dave Whitfield v Keith Cockings/Andrew
Hatton
The Cockings/Hatton pair eased to a 5-0 lead only to see it pegged
back to level. The game changed when Dave tried to draw a 2nd
but flicked the jack to go 2 down, a lead they couldnt
recover with Cockings/Hatton winning 10-8.
Semi-Finals
Susan and George Savage v John O'Brien/Arthur Rosie
Again the Savage pair seemed in the groove 5-0 up after 3 ends
but two ends later they were level at 5-5. The Savages then regained
the lead and despite O'Brien/Rosie's best efforts a pair of 2s
saw the Savages go through 10-5.
Paul Hurren/Mick Rogers v Keith Cockings/Andrew Hatton
This was going to be tight as the Turvey quartet know each other
so well. After 4 ends Hurren/Rogers had slipped 7-3 down but
by the 6th end it was 8-5 to Cockings/Hatton. The match was as
tight as the bowling from all four players. As the timer went
Cockings/Hatton were 1 down leading 8-7, they tried to move the
shot, knowing an extra end would result if they missed it 8-8.
The extra was as close too but an excellent draw by Mick saw
Andrew needing to hit the head, and although he did he was still
1 down. 9-8 to Hurren/Rogers.
Final
Paul Hurren/Mick Rogers (Turvey) v Susan and George Savage
(Clophill)
As time was pressing both teams agreed to play 7 ends in the
final. The Turvey duo were out of blocks in a flash and and after
4 ends were 10-0 up. The 5th saw them pick 2 more shots up so
it was a near impossible they would loose two 6s on the last
two ends. George tried but to no avail.
Well done Paul and Mick on winning on the day. Thanks to all
who took part in a fantastic days bowling and to all who stayed
to the end and helped clear away.

Semi-Finals
Leslie Nunn 4-7 Nathan Salvidge
Nathan edged into an early lead 4-0 but a 3 on the third end
got Leslie into the match then a single levelled it up but Nathan
then took 3 singles to win 7-4.
Neil Rixon 5-4 Andrew Hatton
This was very close and after 5 ends it was 3-3. Andrew picks
a single up on the 6th end to lead. Neil holds a shot with the
last wood of the game in his hand, are we going to an extra end?
A super draw in sees him take 2 shots to win.
Final
Neil Rixon (Barton) v Nathan Salvidge (Clophill)
End 1 - Nathan is in a bit of trouble 4 down but runs his final
wood into the head to split it saving 3 shots, 1-0.
End 2 - I'ts blow for blow as each takes shot and Nathan has
a single after his final wood, 1-1.
End 3 - Neil is in on the jack to take a single Nathan just misses
with his last, 2-1.
End 4 - Neil is once again tight to the jack with his lead wood
to take a single, 3-1.
End 5 - Nathan tries to open the head only to see jack roll to
Neil's back wood, 4-1.
End 6 - Neil looks in control holding 2 but again Nathan rescues
the situation with his last wood to take a single, 4-2.
End 7 - Nathan is close this end and holds 2. Neil springs the
jack to hold with his third then blocks with his final wood leaving
no shot for Nathan, 5-2.
End 8 - The jack is pushed towards the end of the mat, its
a very close measure for shot. Nathan has a draw on to the jack
to take 2 but his wood is just wide and tips Neil in for shot
6-2.
End 9 - With Nathan needing a full house Neil draws close to
take the game with a 2 and win 8 -2.
Well done to both was a magnificent final. Congratulations to
Nathan in his first competition since returning from college
and to Neil on retaining his title from last year which is no
mean feat.
Finally, the raffle on the day was rasing money for The Stroke
Association and along with George Savage's money from the Isle
of Wight £325 will be donated.
